Donjon the cat

The tale behind the tomcat

The Legend of Donjon

Every keep has a founding story. Ours begins with a very good cat, and it happens to be true.

  1. Chapter I

    The Long Wait

For two years they wanted him before they even knew his name. Two people, one small flat, and a landlord who kept saying no cats. When the yes finally came, it did not feel like permission. It felt like a gate swinging open.

  2. Chapter II

    The Keep

Before he ever arrived, they built him a tower: tall and wooden, made for climbing and ruling and long afternoon naps. In the old castles, the strongest tower, the safe heart where you keep what you love, is called a donjon.

She had wanted a cat for longer than she could say; some hearts need a small, warm creature to make the hard days survivable. So they gave the tower its name, and kept it ready for whoever would come.

  3. Chapter III

    The Name, Written Twice

Then they saw the advertisement: a little orange tomcat, two hours past the edge of Prague. There were kittens closer, plenty of them. But the notice gave his name, and his name stopped them cold.

The tower they had built was a donjon. The cat was a Donjon. Some names are only a word; this one had been written twice, as if the world had already decided. They drove out to meet him that week, and from the first look there was nothing left to decide.

  4. Chapter IV

    Donjon the Perfect

He was so small they had to wait three weeks before he could leave his mother. When he finally came home to his keep, he was, impossibly, perfect. Calm but never dull, playful but never trouble, gentle with every soul he met.

A whole week of the best cat anyone could hope to raise. They called him Donjon the Perfect, and they were not exaggerating.

  5. Chapter V

    The Last Meow

On a Friday, one of them left on a journey. Over that quiet weekend his small body, still learning how to grow, forgot how to make the blood it needed. There was a chance, a slim one, paved with more pain than a kitten should carry. And there was mercy, which is the harder kind of love.

They chose mercy, and they stayed with him to the end. When it was time, weak as he was, he lifted his head, looked straight at them, and meowed just once. He knew. It was goodbye, and he said it himself.

  6. Chapter VI

    Forever in the Keep

So they built him one more tower, one that time cannot reach. Donjon lives here now, the first knight of the keep: he greets every new cat, cheers every small victory, and passes on the things he knew by heart. Be brave. Be gentle. Be the best of all good cats.

They had hoped to raise a lion from a kitten. What they got was a knight who never leaves his post.
